Archbishop Weakland, who had been the intellectual touchstone for church reformers, has said little publicly since then. But now, in an interview and in a memoir scheduled for release next month, he is speaking out about how internal church politics affected his response to the fallout from his affair; how bishops and the Vatican cared more about the rights of abusive priests than about their victims; and why Catholic teaching on homosexuality is wrong.
“If we say our God is an all-loving god,” he said, “how do you explain that at any given time probably 400 million living on the planet at one time would be gay? Are the religions of the world, as does Catholicism, saying to those hundreds of millions of people, you have to pass your whole life without any physical, genital expression of that love?”
He said he had been aware of his homosexual orientation since he was a teenager and suppressed it until he became archbishop, when he had relationships with several men because of “loneliness that became very strong.”
Archbishop Weakland, 82, said he was probably the first bishop to come out of the closet voluntarily. He said he was doing so not to excuse his actions but to give an honest account of why it happened and to raise questions about the church’s teaching that homosexuality is “objectively disordered.”
“Those are bad words because they are pejorative,” he said....

E sempre il NYTimes aggiunge :

At a tearful and somber prayer service, Archbishop Rembert G. Weakland apologized tonight to Roman Catholics here. He said he accepted ''full responsibility for the inappropriate nature'' of his relationship with a man who accused the archbishop of sexually assaulting him and was paid $450,000 in an out-of-court settlement.
''I apologize to all the faithful of this archdiocese, which I love so much, to all its people and clergy, for the scandal that has occurred because of my sinfulness,'' Archbishop Weakland, whose retirement Pope John Paul II accepted last week, said at the Archbishop Cousins Catholic Center. ''Long ago, I placed that sinfulness in God's loving and forgiving heart. But now and into the future, I worry about those whose faith may be shaken by my acts.'' [Excerpts, Page A11.]

Archbishop Weakland's appearance before several hundred Catholics included his first public remarks since it became known last week that he had been accused of sexually assaulting a graduate student more than 22 years ago.

In a statement after the scandal became public, Archbishop Weakland had tried to subdue criticism about the money in the settlement with the student, Paul J. Marcoux, now 54.

The archbishop said that over the years he had turned over to the archdiocese money that he had earned from lectures and writing. Those funds, he said, ''far exceed any settlement amount.''

Today, Archbishop Weakland said that turned out to be untrue. According to a statement by the archdiocese released after the service, the sum of stipends, honorariums and gifts from Archbishop Weakland's work, including interest, totaled $196,723, less than half the payment to Mr. Marcoux in 1998.

''In my mind, the money I had given the archdiocese was more than the settlement amount,'' Archbishop Weakland said tonight. ''To my continued embarrassment, I am now told that is not true.''

He pledged that ''in my remaining years, I will continue to contribute to the archdiocese whatever I can and, of course, the archdiocese will receive whatever effects I own on my death.''

Archbishop Weakland has denied that he sexually assaulted Mr. Marcoux, although he has conceded that Mr. Marcoux received the money in exchange for his silence.

In his apology today, Archbishop Weakland said that he understood the concerns over the amount, adding that at the time he ''understood the settlement in question as compensation for Paul Marcoux because of the claim that I had interfered with his ability to earn income.''

''Rather than spend the money litigating this claim,'' he continued, ''I agreed to an out-of-court settlement. In hindsight, I can see why it has the appearance of 'hush money.' Perhaps I should have handled this situation differently. If I had done so, there would still have been sizable costs to the church. But at least it would have been out in the open.

''For that lack of courage, I apologize.''

The case made news on May 23, when Mr. Marcoux appeared on ''Good Morning America'' on ABC-TV, ending his silence. After a firestorm, Archbishop Weakland requested that the Vatican speed his retirement.

In the interview, Mr. Marcoux contended that the archbishop had sexually assaulted him when he was a 33-year-old graduate student. He said that the assault occurred when he went to Archbishop Weakland for advice on entering the priesthood and that the archbishop committed what amounted to ''date rape'' after dinner in the archbishop's apartment.

The accusation was the first direct accusation of sexual misconduct against an American archbishop since the series of accusations began in January.

Archbishop Weakland had been the nation's most outspokenly liberal archbishop.

Pope Paul VI appointed him 25 years ago. As archbishop of Milwaukee, he wrote or was co-author of more than 12 books. He also placed women in positions of authority, criticized militants in the anti-abortion movement and testified in favor of gay rights.
